This week the ladies prepared for there first match of the new season. Facing the Harlequins 3rd team with a flat 10, and a lack of rain during the upcoming weeks meant expectations were unusually low. Moral was only lowered as the Quins put down the first try within minutes of the game. But despite having the disadvantage in the scrum, quick reactions in the rucks by the Risborough forwards created regular turnovers, this along with the back’s breaking through tackles with their committed runs saw the score balance out with a try by Ellen McAleavey. Risborough dominated the first half as they normally do. With some great recycled balls from our forwards making ground and clearing space for our backs to make some serious ground, and within no time we saw a try off a penalty by Kiri Smith. The Quins had a lucky break as a missed tackle meant their 14 made a long dash for the try line balancing the scores again. This didn’t affect the Girls play however, as straight after we saw a try under the post by Megan Coles, as well as a conversion by Kiri Smith. Straight after we saw a second try by Ellen McAleavey ending the first half 22-10. The Quins took advantage of our tired players and their 6 subs in the second half. Fresh legs and more space on the pitch saw them quickly put 2 more tries on us. Risborough didn’t want to waste their hard work however and quickly adjusted their defence to bottle neck their attackers. And soon we saw our 5th try scored in the corner by Ellen McAleavey. Tragedy struck the Risborough team as lock, Chrissy went down with an elbow injury. Being in the 54th minute and with only 9 players we were able to call the game and leave with a winning score of 27-20.
